What is zkPass?
zkPass is a decentralized oracle protocol designed to convert private internet data into verifiable cryptographic proofs that can be used on blockchain networks. It leverages a custom protocol called zkTLS, which combines a three-party version of the standard TLS internet security protocol with hybrid zero-knowledge cryptography to enable proof generation without exposing underlying personal data. At its core, zkPass allows users and applications to selectively prove attributes about real-world data drawn from any HTTPS website, such as identity credentials, financial records, healthcare information, social metrics, professional qualifications, digital asset ownership, and other private data sets, all without requiring API keys, OAuth access, or trusted third parties. Proofs are generated locally on the user’s device or browser, ensuring that raw personal data never leaves the device while still allowing third parties to verify the integrity and authenticity of the claimed information. This architecture supports a broad range of use cases including digital identity verification, decentralized finance, governance, compliance, and AI integration, making private data verifiable in trustless environments while protecting user privacy.
What is ZKP?
A zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) is a cryptographic protocol that enables one party, known as the prover, to demonstrate to another party, known as the verifier, that a specific statement is true without revealing any additional information about the statement itself. The fundamental idea is that the verifier becomes convinced of the truth of the claim solely by examining the proof, yet learns nothing about the underlying data beyond its validity. This property makes zero-knowledge proofs especially valuable in scenarios where privacy is critical, such as authentication systems, identity verification, and blockchain transactions. In practice, ZKPs can be interactive, requiring multiple back-and-forth messages between prover and verifier, or non-interactive, where a single proof suffices; both achieve the same goal of privacy-preserving validation. Zero-knowledge proofs have wide applications beyond blockchain, including secure authentication, confidential computation, and verifiable machine learning, as they allow verification without exposing sensitive data. Their ability to uphold data confidentiality while ensuring integrity through rigorous mathematical guarantees has made them a cornerstone of modern cryptographic systems.
