What Is XRPL? Understanding Ripple’s Network

January 26, 2025

Ripple’s mission is to create a more efficient system for international money transfers. That’s why Ripple developed the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a highly scalable blockchain network focusing on low-cost, real-time transactions and global financial liquidity.

Let’s unpack what XRPL is and what makes it stand out.

What’s So Special About XRPL?

XRPL was launched in 2012 with a clear vision: address the complexities and inefficiencies of traditional financial systems.

The network processes transactions in just 3-5 seconds and handles over 1,500 transactions per second, all while maintaining fees at a fraction of a cent

This is possible thanks to its unique consensus mechanism, the XRPL Consensus Protocol, where validators are chosen based on their reliability. Agreement is reached when 80% of trusted validators confirm a transaction. This system allows for quick finality while maintaining security and decentralization.

What Are Hooks in XRPL?

Hooks are XRPL's take on smart contracts. These are small pieces of code that attach directly to XRPL accounts and automatically execute when specified conditions are met.

Unlike Ethereum's smart contracts, Hooks are lightweight and predictable, with fixed costs and execution times. They can perform functions like automatic payments, trading rules, or complex business logic.

What Is XRPL DEX?

One of XRPL's most interesting features is its native DEX, which has been part of the protocol since its inception.

The DEX allows for direct trading of any tokens issued on the network, including XRP and various tokenized assets. The DEX automatically finds the best paths for trades, even combining multiple trading pairs to achieve the best rate.

What Is XRP?

XRP is the native currency of XRPL. Unlike BTC, XRP can't be mined; instead, all tokens were created at the network's launch. These tokens are used to pay transaction fees and prevent network spam. XRP also acts as a bridge currency for exchanges between different assets.

XRPL Use Cases

XRPL has numerous use cases across different sectors.

Xumm wallet, developed by XRPL Labs, has become the network's primary self-custody wallet solution suitable both for retail and business users. Other prominent projects include Sologenic DEX, GateHub, and Sologenic NFT marketplace.

But particularly noteworthy are Ripple’s partnerships with financial institutions, such as:

  • MoneyGram
  • Bank of America
  • Santander Bank
  • SBI Holdings in Japan
  • Several banks in the Asia-Pacific region

These institutions primarily use XRPL through RippleNet (Ripple's payment network) to enable fast international transfers. The process works by converting the sender's currency to XRP, transferring it almost instantly across borders, then converting it back to the recipient's local currency.

They also use XRP as a bridge for currency pairs that traditionally have low liquidity. For example, converting Thai Baht to Mexican Peso directly can be expensive and slow.

Several central banks are also exploring XRPL as a potential platform for CBDCs. The network's ability to handle high transaction volumes and its pre-built tokenization features make it attractive for this purpose.

Conclusion

What sets XRPL apart is not just its technical capabilities, but its practical application in solving real-world financial challenges.

With major financial institutions already implementing its technology and central banks exploring its potential for CBDCs, XRPL bridges traditional finance and blockchain. This means that XRPL might become an integral part of our daily financial activities in the future.
